Supplements

Before diving into the rabbit hole that is the supplement industry, It would be very remiss of me if I did not point out the fact that supplements are just that: Supplemental

If anyone tells you different, they are trying to sell you something.

First, supplements by definition are items you add to your already balanced diet to increase the probability of a desired effect. They are not meant to replace any component of your nutrition nor be the primary source.

Secondly, keep in mind that the supplement industry is a billion dollar industry. The economic impact of this sector leaves companies willing to pour money into marketing giving the illusion of necessity, but alas it is just that an illusion.

Thirdly, most supplements do not have FDA approval and lack significant scientific evidence in the form of published peer review literature. While the anecdotal “Bro” effect is charming and alluring, in reality the positive effects people attribute to supplements, may only be, at best due to placebo.

Finally, while I have used and in the future will provide supplements, I am a firm believer that these add only minute amounts of benefit when compared to adequate lifestyle choices, optimized nutrition and an individualized fitness program. In other words, if buying supplements will cause a financial strain, choose other ways to optimize your goals prior to purchasing.

Below are a few supplements that have scientific published literature that suggests a positive benefit to their consumption. While effects do exist on a spectrum (i.e. results vary), these may provide you with benefits.

  1. Multi Vitamin
  2. Creatine
  3. BCAA
  4. ZMA
  5. Whey
  6. Maltodextrin
  7. Pre workout
  8. Caffeine
  9. Glutamine
  10. HMG
  11. Fish Oil
