AAPM&R Annual Conference 2024: Whats it good for?

This year, the conference was held in San Diego, California. You could not ask for better weather. Since I was living in Seattle, the warmer weather and sun were much needed. Like always, the annual conference is jam-packed with experiences and information that can be daunting. Spoiler: It’s worth every minute.

You can find last years conference here.

Below are some of my take aways of the year.

  1. You could not ask for a better location, IMHO. I stayed within walking distance, allowing me a brief 10-minute walk every morning to attend. The conference center is across the street from the famous Gaslamp Quarter, San Diego’s downtown area, which is full of food options and places to decompress and enjoy the nightlife.
  2. Attending the Job and Fellowship fair gets easier every year. During my first conference, I was hesitant to approach each booth. Now, I am more directed and know which questions to ask.
  3. Conferences: As a first-year attending, I gravitated toward early career conferences. There are ample topics appropriate for every level of your career.
  4. Attend the Party: This year’s location was the USS Midway. An abridged tour of the naval ship was available. We spent the night on deck for the trifecta: good music, delicious food, and an awe-inspiring fireworks show.
  5. Food: The food at the conference was sparse. While I am grateful that we were provided with a “boxed” lunch, the cold sandwich, chips/cookies, and sugary soda left much to be desired. Thankfully, the Gaslamp Quarter was across the street, with many options to improve the P in PM&R (Protein).
  6. Plenarium: This is a must-attend for all. We had the infamous Dr. Glaucomflecken and amputee influencer/inspirational host Josh Sundquist, and the serious yet light-hearted laughter they provided energized the room.

TL:DR

  • Sign up to become a member at AAPM&R. If you are a student, it is free; if you are a resident/fellow or early career physician, enjoy a discounted rate; even if you are a seasoned practitioner, membership provides many benefits.
  • Plan each day. Watch for recorded sessions to see them later if scheduling conflicts exist.
  • Sign up for a skills lab or participate in the many hands-on sessions in the Pavillon.
  • Attend the Town hall and Business meetings. They give you a pulse on the academy’s current and future directions.
  • Network. It is amazing how small our community is. Be bold and ask how you can become involved.

See you in Salt Lake City, Utah on October 22-25, 2025! Stay tuned for more information and to register here.
