I am an avid follower of both Dr. Peter Attia and Dr. Huberman. Dr. Peter Attia creator of The Drive, Nerd Safari, recently celebrated his birthday and the release of his newest book. (No affiliation and will post review after reading it, stay tuned). The podcast is slightly over three hours, yet far too short for a comprehensive deep dive. This podcast is sure to inspire you to find out more about how to optimize your life. Here are a few takeaways that I found noteworthy.
TLDR:
- Dr. Attia recommends his clients track Blood Pressure readings twice a day. Of note, recommends manual pressure cuff testing over automatic pressure cuffs since the latter tends to approximate on the higher end.
- Cholesterol: Besides a Lipid panel, you should include Apolipoprotein A and Apolipoprotein B diagnostic tests. These tests provide us with more diagnostic information regarding the total amount of HDL and LDL in the context of possible cardiovascular disease.
- Falls: One of the risk factors for disability in older patients, significantly associated, is a Femur Fracture. A Femoral Neck fracture carries a mortality of approximately 15-36% at one year, worse with advanced age*.
- Alzheimer’s Disease: Mutation in specific genes may have a prognostic role, including APP and APOe genetic tests. Appropriated sleep, lower lipids, insulin sensitivity, and exercise influence brain health.
- Quality of Relationships: His focus in life is not only on himself but also on others. “Being mindful of and acting as quickly as possible every time he does something damning to a relationship.” In regards to himself, removing negative self-talk and instead talked to himself as he would be talking to a friend.
